Sec 4 A-Math Tuition in Singapore

Small Sec 4 A-Math classes at our Katong and Hougang centres, in a separate class from E-Math, at the A-Math pace. Sec 4 is the calculus year: differentiation, integration and kinematics by mid-year, then the whole two-year syllabus revised for the national exam. We teach the new chapters in MOE's order and revise by question type, the way the paper tests them.

Who this class is for

  • Sec 4 students whose A-Math slipped in Sec 3 and who want H2 Math at JC. JCs expect A-Math for it, and from the 2028 JC admissions the Math requirement is G3 Math or G3 A-Math at D7 or better.
  • Sec 4 students who know the chapters but lose marks on the long questions, where trigonometry, logarithms and calculus meet in one problem.
  • Sec 4 students taking both E-Math and A-Math with us. The Double Math bundle covers two separate classes.
  • Sec 3 students moving into Sec 4 who want differentiation started before school does. Our 2027 Sec 4 A-Math classes begin in November 2026.

What Sec 4 A-Math covers

Sec 4 A-Math (SEAB 4049 for G3, 4051 for G2; from 2027 the same content under SEC codes K341 and K232) is calculus for the first half of the year, then revision of the whole Sec 3 and Sec 4 syllabus for the national exam. Differentiation and integration are the biggest blocks of marks in the paper every year, and they lean on every Sec 3 chapter: indices, logarithms, trigonometric identities and coordinate geometry. G2 A-Math (SEC code K232) leaves out kinematics, proofs in plane geometry and the calculus of trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions, and its papers are shorter.

  • Differentiation: rules, products, quotients and chains
  • Applications of differentiation: tangents, rates of change, stationary points
  • Differentiation of trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Integration
  • Applications of integration: areas
  • Kinematics
  • Proofs in plane geometry
  • Revision: quadratics, surds, polynomials and partial fractions
  • Revision: binomial theorem, exponentials, logarithms and linear law
  • Revision: coordinate geometry, circles and trigonometry

The SEC format from SEAB's 2027 syllabuses (G3 Additional Mathematics K341, G2 Additional Mathematics K232). SEAB says the mode of assessment and overall standard are the same as the O-Level and N(A)-Level papers they replace. The formula sheet does not include the R-formula, the log laws or any calculus result.

O-Level in 2026, SEC from 2027

Sec 4 students in 2026 sit the last O-Level A-Math papers this October. From 2027, Sec 4 students sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate, with each subject at the level it was taken. The papers stay the same in format and standard; the certificate and the admission rules after it change. Our guide to the SEC exam explains the grades and L1R4 for JC.

How we teach Sec 4 A-Math

Calculus is taught badly when it is taught as rules. We teach what a derivative is before the rules, on the screen, so the applications (tangents, rates, maximum and minimum problems, areas) make sense instead of being memorised. Then, from mid-year, we revise by question type across both years, with the working laid out the way the mark scheme pays for it, and timed papers as the exam gets close.

  1. 1

Calculus from the idea, not the rule

What a gradient function is, what an integral adds up, drawn in front of the student, before the rules are drilled.

  2. 2

    Revision by question type

From mid-year, every question type the national paper sets, one type at a time, across Sec 3 and Sec 4, so nothing in Paper 1 or Paper 2 is a surprise.

  3. 3

Working the way the marker pays for it

A-Math marking gives nothing for a right idea with a wrong line. Students learn which line earns each mark and write it.

  4. 4

    Past papers under time

In the last term, full papers under exam conditions, marked line by line, with a short list of what to fix before the next one.

Also included

  • A separate A-Math class of two hours, once a week, at Katong, Hougang Central or Opp Hougang CC. E-Math has its own class.
  • Our own notes for the calculus chapters and a revision pack covering every question type in the national paper.
  • Personalised exam cheatsheets before each WA, the Prelim and the national exam, including the formulas that are not on the formula sheet.
  • Help outside class: students can message their tutor with homework questions.
  • Our suggested answers to the national A-Math papers, published within 24 hours of each paper.

After Sec 4: what the A-Math grade is for

A-Math is the subject JC looks at. From the 2028 admissions, the Math requirement is G3 Math or G3 A-Math at D7 or better, every subject counted in L1R4 must be G3, and A-Math and E-Math can both count in the aggregate, one as the Math or Science subject and the other as a best subject. JCs expect A-Math for H2 Math.

For poly, the requirement is listed as Math or A-Math, so A-Math is not needed on its own; a good A-Math grade can count as a relevant or best subject.

What we see in class

Our aim for a Sec 4 A-Math student is the grade that keeps JC open, and in the mark scheme that means two things: no lost method marks on calculus, and the trigonometry and logarithm chapters from Sec 3 kept alive, because the paper puts them inside the calculus questions.

Starting Sec 4 in 2027? Lessons begin in November 2026

Our 2027 academic year starts in November 2026, after the school End-of-Year exams. It is the regular weekly Sec 4 A-Math class at the usual fee, not a separate programme.

We use November and December for differentiation and for the Sec 3 chapters the End-of-Year exam showed were weak, so Term 1 starts ahead rather than behind. The 2027 Sec 4 cohort is the first to sit the SEC.

Frequently asked questions

Which exam will my child sit?

Sec 4 students in 2026 sit the O-Level A-Math papers in October 2026, the last ones. From 2027, Sec 4 students sit the SEC, with A-Math examined at the level it was taken. SEAB says the format and overall standard do not change: two papers of 2 hours 15 minutes and 90 marks each at G3.

Is it too late to start A-Math tuition in Sec 4?

No, but the earlier the better. Calculus is new in Sec 4 and is the biggest block of marks in the paper, so a student who starts in Term 1 learns it properly the first time. A student joining mid-year has the Prelim and the national exam ahead, and we revise by question type to cover the most ground.

Does my child need A-Math for JC?

Not by rule. From the 2028 admissions, the Math requirement is G3 Math or G3 A-Math at D7 or better, so G3 Math alone meets it. But JCs expect A-Math for H2 Math, so for a student who wants H2 Math the answer in practice is yes. Poly courses accept Math or A-Math, so A-Math is not needed there.

Do you teach A-Math and E-Math in the same class?

No. A-Math has its own class at the A-Math pace, and E-Math has its own. A student taking both with us is in two classes, covered by the Double Math bundle.

What is on the A-Math formula sheet, and what is not?

The sheet gives the quadratic formula, the binomial expansion and the basic trigonometric identities and formulae. It does not give the R-formula, the log laws or any differentiation or integration result. We put the missing ones on the exam cheatsheet and drill them.

Do you also teach Sec 5?

Yes. Sec 5 students taking A-Math at G3 sit the same papers as the Sec 4 G3 cohort and join our Sec 4 A-Math class.

Do you follow my child's school's order of topics?

Our syllabus follows MOE's order. Where a school teaches in a different order, we provide supplementary coaching in class as the test approaches.
