Your child started Sec 1 in G2 Math. Moving up to G3 is possible, and Sec 1 gives the most chances. Here is how schools decide, when it happens, and how we make sure your child is ready.
By Mr Zac Lai, Principal and Head of Curriculum · Updated 13 October 2026
Under Full Subject-Based Banding, each subject has its own level. Your child can move up in Math alone and keep other subjects at G2.
Same form class
Your child keeps their form class and goes to a G3 class for Math lessons.
G3 tests, G3 exam
From the move on, Math tests and the national exam are at G3, the old Express level.
It can go both ways
A school can move a subject down if a student struggles, and back up again later.
MOE: after the start of Sec 1, students "may offer subjects at a more demanding level based on their performance in the subject in secondary school and a holistic assessment by the school to ensure that the student can cope with the subject and overall workload."
MOE does not set one pass mark. Each school decides, from your child's Math results and whether the school thinks they can cope with G3 Math and their overall workload.
Aim for 75%. Parents often hear "consistent A1". Every school we found that publishes a number uses 75% in the subject. It is the mark that counts, so ask your child's school which tests it looks at.

Reaching the bar makes your child eligible. The school still makes an overall judgement.
The offer comes from the school, for example through the form teacher. You do not need to apply.
Schools "guide and advise students on their eligibility" (MOE). Ask your child's school when it reviews levels.
Not sure how close your child is?
Send us their latest WA marks and their school. We will tell you honestly how far they are from 75%, and what to work on first.
There are up to four chances. Which ones your child gets depends on the school.
1
Start of Sec 1: from PSLE
AL5 or better in PSLE Math lets your child take G3 Math from day one, even if most subjects are at G2. MOE's own example: a PSLE score of 23 with AL5 in Math.
2
Sec 1 mid-year
Some schools review after Term 2. Xinmin uses the average of WA1 and WA2. Northbrooks and St. Margaret's also review at mid-year.
3
End of Sec 1
The review point most schools publish. Your child starts Sec 2 in G3 Math.
4
End of Sec 2
Some schools review again before Sec 3, for example Xinmin, Jurong, Mayflower and Yishun. By then G3 classes are a full year ahead in some topics.
Why we aim for Sec 1
No official rule says Sec 1 is easier. This is our view from the classroom: Sec 1 has the most chances to move, and the topic gap to G3 is smallest then.
At schools that review mid-year, the first two terms decide it. Both of our students who moved up mid-year scored high on their Term 2 test: 84% and 29 out of 30.
04 · After Sec 4
Why G3 Math matters later
G2 Math still leads somewhere good. G3 Math opens more doors.
Junior College
G3 only
From the 2028 JAE, every subject counted for JC admission must be taken at G3. The Math requirement is G3 Math or G3 A-Math, A1 to D7.
Polytechnic (Year 1)
Counts more at G3
MOE: English and the relevant and best subjects (R1, R2, B1) use G3 grades. Only the last best subject (B2) can use a G2 grade.
A-Math in Sec 3
G3 Math first
Jurong Sec offers A-Math at G3 only and asks for a strong Sec 2 G3 Math foundation. Yishun Sec asks for 50% in G3 Math for G3 A-Math, or 75% in G2 Math for G2 A-Math.
Polytechnic Foundation Programme
G2 works
The PFP route counts G2 grades, so G2 Math is not a dead end. It is one route of several.
G2 Math is not G3 Math at a slower pace. It teaches some topics later and leaves some out, so a student who moves up joins a G3 class that is already ahead.
Linear graphs
G3 Math teaches linear functions and their graphs in Sec 1. G2 Math waits until Sec 2.
Trigonometry
G3 Math starts trigonometric ratios in Sec 2. G2 Math waits until Sec 3.
Topics G2 leaves out
Sets and Venn diagrams, matrices and vectors are taught in G3 Math only.
Harder questions
G3 sets topics like circle properties, bearings and box plots in compulsory questions. G2 keeps them in an optional section.

How we close the gap
In Sec 1, our G2 and G3 students learn together in one class. The Sec 1 syllabus is nearly the same at both levels: G2 is not tested on two topics. Our G2 students learn those two anyway.
So when the school moves your child up, the gap is already closed. And if your child stays in G2, nothing is wasted: G2 Math teaches those topics in Sec 2.

Sec 1 G2 Math tuition at Math Vigilante
One Sec 1 class for G2 and G3 students, so moving up comes with no gap to fill.
Small classes, so the tutor sees your child's working, not just the final answer.
One 2-hour lesson a week, following the school's Sec 1 order, with our own notes for every chapter.
G2 and G3 learn together in Sec 1. Your child also covers the two topics G2 is not tested on, so a move to G3 mid-year or at year end comes with no catching up.
After the trial lesson, our Post Trial Analysis & Feedback tells you where your child is losing marks.
Physical classes at Katong, Hougang Central and Opp Hougang CC.

Yes. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, a student can take a subject at a more demanding level based on their results and the school's overall judgement. Your child can move up in Math only and keep other subjects at G2.
2What score does my child need to move up to G3 Math?
Each school sets its own bar. Every school we found that publishes one uses 75% in the subject, for example Xinmin, Loyang View, Northbrooks, St. Margaret's and Springfield Secondary. Some look at the mid-year result, others at the year-end result. Ask your child's school which tests count.
3Is it "consistent A1 for two terms"?
That is close, but not the rule most schools publish. The number is 75% in the subject. Xinmin Secondary's mid-year check is the closest match: the average of WA1 and WA2 must be 75% or more. Other schools use the semester or year-end mark.
4When can my child move up to G3 Math?
At some schools after the Sec 1 mid-year results, at most schools at the end of Sec 1, and at some schools again at the end of Sec 2. Your child's school will tell you when it reviews levels.
5Can my child take G3 Math from the start of Sec 1?
Yes, if they scored AL5 or better in PSLE Math. MOE's example: a student with a PSLE score of 23 and AL5 in Math is admitted through Posting Group 2 and can take Math at G3 from the start of Sec 1.
6Is it easier to move up in Sec 1 than in Sec 2?
No official rule says so. In our view Sec 1 is the best time: there are more review points, and the topic gap to G3 is smaller. By the end of Sec 2, G3 classes have covered topics such as trigonometry that G2 classes reach only in Sec 3.
7Will my child change class after moving up?
Your child keeps their form class. MOE groups students in different classes for each subject by subject level, so they join a G3 class for Math lessons.
8What if my child struggles after moving up to G3?
A school can move a subject to a less demanding level if a student struggles, and MOE allows a student to move up again later as they gain confidence. Catching up on G3 topics before the switch makes a struggle less likely.
9Does G3 Math matter for JC?
Yes. From the 2028 JAE, every subject counted for JC admission must be taken at G3, and the Math requirement is G3 Math or G3 A-Math at A1 to D7.
10Can a G2 Math student take A-Math in Sec 3?
It depends on the school. G2 A-Math exists, and some schools offer it to G2 Math students with 75% or more. G3 A-Math usually needs G3 Math first: Jurong Secondary asks for a strong Sec 2 G3 Math foundation, and Yishun Secondary asks for 50% in G3 Math.
11What should my child learn before moving up to G3 Math?
The topics G3 teaches earlier: linear functions and their graphs (G3 Sec 1, G2 Sec 2) and trigonometric ratios (G3 Sec 2, G2 Sec 3). Sets and Venn diagrams, matrices and vectors are in G3 only. In our Sec 1 classes, G2 students learn the Sec 1 G3 topics alongside G3 students, so they are ready if the school moves them up.
12Does Math Vigilante teach Sec 1 G2 Math?
Yes. In Sec 1, G2 and G3 students learn together in one class, because the syllabus is nearly the same and G2 is not tested on two topics. Our G2 students learn those topics too, so they are ready to move up. Small classes at Katong and Hougang, 2 hours a week, $280 for 4 lessons in 2026. Trials are paid lessons, by appointment.
